Very interested read thanks! I couldn't let it pass however to mention to other readers that advice I have read from several sources all suggest that you shouldn't rub snow on frostbiten skin or rub the skin to produce friction and therefore heat. One source is http://health.yahoo.com/topic/emergency/burn/article/mayoclinic/6F88EF4F-85D3-4B1D-BA4902DEA7706C5C . However maybe this situation in the story was one that suggests that this is not always the case.

It is indeed bad advice and responsible, I believe, for a considerable number of Napoleon's troops becoming unservicable. The belief was that it was better to keep the flesh frozen rather than keep heating it up and having it freeze again.I assume that our hero in the current tale was very lucky not to have fared worse.
